VISUAL SYNOPSIS for Shine scripts I. Journey to Etrah Island

Shine is set in a world, not unlike our world, but 150 years in the future.  A peaceful and advanced world,  citizens have enjoyed freedom and harmony for hundreds of years.  But her heart is blackened by a dark secret.

Buried deep in her past, something sinister lies dormant, waiting silently for the one thing that can trigger it...

That day has arrived.

S Y N O P S I S

On the White Lady Islands of St. Ana, Sam Wade, a brilliant scientist, knows something that others don’t.  His secret is forced to the surface when king Allison threatens war, which secretly triggers an ancient, disastrous bind to unravel.  Sam must get to Etrah Island and follow the scripts before it’s too late.  The race is on to bring his eight-year-old daughter Rain, and sister-in-law, Mimi, home from another island, navigating a mass evacuation, outmanoeuvring police, encountering a dolly mixture of characters.

Along with M1, their family droid, and Josh, the witty neighbour, they take a perilous journey to Etrah through an ancient underground.  There, they unearth a grim past, encounter unfamiliar creatures, and witness the rise of a distant soul – while covertly pursued by Lieutenant Harland and his team.

The island has secrets - is tuned into a different channel -  a place where curious things happen, and reality shifts in its corridors.  Delivered in a fantastical manner by Charlie - who may or may not be the butler - the consequences of yesteryear meddling with the cosmos are revealed.  The oracle, the clock hallway, and ‘the door,’ chart the initial course towards restoring order before time runs out.

SAM
WADE

Sam Wade, a tech wiz from St. Ana, on the Southlands, has been harbouring an incredible secret, one he truly believed would stay buried in the past.  His nightmare begins when he returns home after a month-long stint at R.Tech, where he has been co-leading a universal project, and learns that war has been threatened.  Initially, he dismisses it, thinking it’s only King Alisson, the wasp of the world, throwing his toys out of the pram again, but when his colleague, Jack, secretly calls from the laboratories, with news that all employees have been confined, and that the whole of the Northlands has been put on shutdown, with Sam’s plane, the last to leave, he knows that if this is what he thinks it is, then catastrophe is about to strike.  First, he needs to be sure, and he finds the proof behind a wall in his basement lab.

SOMETHING
WITH THE BRIDGE

“Unbelievable,” whispered Sam, in amazement.

But the strangeness wasn’t over.  The wind suddenly parted on the deck, which put them in a void free from all elements: the wind, the rain, the sea spray.  Beyond the void, the storm was still raging.  They could see the water, and all the debris; bits of paper, grit, pieces of wood, bumping and springing off the invisible wall.

Chapter Seven The Blue | Wash Out
At the foot of the stairs - Grandad

“Okay,” Mimi blew out, “so a lot of fish washed up.  There has to be a simple explanation for that.  Maybe there was something in the water, a strange toxin?”

“If there were toxins, we wouldn’t be allowed to swim there,” said Rain, astutely.  “And that doesn’t explain the birds!” She folded her arms, extremely eager to hear what she had to say about that!

“Birds?” asked Sam, his attention flitting between them.

“A lot of birds were spotted flying around the beach, but I’m sure they were there for the fish…”

“No, Aunt Mimi,” said Rain, dourly, cutting her off, frustrated she was playing it down. “They didn’t stop for the fish.  They flew right past the fish towards the mainland, plus, you’re not telling dad how many there were.”

Sam’s eyes spun to Mimi again.

She blinked.

“Millions Dad.  There were millions.  They covered the sky!” she said, reaching over and grabbing his hand to gain his full attention.  “Like when the clouds came out of nowhere that time, and they covered the sun for days, remember?  Everything went dark.  Mr. Barre, our science teacher, said there were many strange and wonderful things happening around us right now, especially in the sea.   He talked about a ship that washed up on the sand dune beach, with no one on board!  He was so excited about it.  It’s all he could talk about in class today!”

“I’ve met Mr. Barre, and you only have to look at his light up parasite tie to know the man is off the radar… but yes, I do admit, the fish and bird thing was weird,” said Mimi, clearly on a losing streak for logic and grasping at straws.  “But sometimes things happen without an explanation,” she stated firmly.

The woman stepped into the light.  It took a moment before Sam could understand what he was actually looking at, then the force of the surprise took him stumbling back.

It couldn’t be. He had to be seeing things.

FLASHBACK

run until we die

Journey to Etrah Island - wee snippets

Race to Etrah Island

‘The waters will rise, and the sky will fall’

Supported by wooden framing, and with a track running up the middle, the shaft ran on an upwards slope.  The Goblin’s Gold did not reach this far, but up ahead, they could see a ray of yellow light breaching the shaft.

“To the light,” Sam called to Josh up ahead.

Sam could see Josh stop in the light, cry with delight, and disappear off the trail.  He caught up seconds later.  It was an adjoining shaft, with its gate torn off and set to the side.  Smaller than the rest, it was lined with burning gas lamps but strewn with broken carts and fallen beams, which after seeing Josh hurtle over or climb under, Sam then echoed his moves, a little less nimbly, while the hum of surging water grew louder.

There were many exits off the shaft, but most were either boarded up or gated, until Josh stopped at one, gave Sam a huge arm wave then disappeared inside.  The appointed shaft was a stone step tower, spiraling upwards, and again, its gate had been damaged, this one dangling on one hinge.  M1’s gate-wrecking was the breadcrumbs they needed, and the exit didn’t come a second too soon, as the water surged through the gas lit shaft, swelling up the steps after Sam.

Josh wasn’t aware that the water had entered the steps, but Sam’s hollers sent him into another gear as he corkscrewed and leapt his way up.  Sam tried to keep up, but the backpack was heavy.  A blinding thought had him rip it off and throw it away, but Rain’s medicine was in it.  There would be none on the island.

The Oracle

Her voice reached them before she did.  Soft, cushioned, and seductive, it seemed to emanate from every corner of the room.  “Welcome,” she breathed. “My name is Nel.  I am the oracle and guide of Etrah, and I am honoured to be your narrator tonight.”

The emphasis she placed on ‘the’ by pronouncing it as ‘thee,’ was a lie.  She was one of many, but Sam expected no less from her.  She was arrogant and she grated on him.  Again, he wondered just why Charlie had selected her for this occasion.

Josh nearly broke his neck, craning around, trying to catch sight of her.  But in the darkness – candles extinguished, fire dwindling, and the light from the hologram scene not spreading through the room – Nel remained hidden.

Sam rolled his eyes, awaiting her grand entrance, wondering which way she would choose to reveal herself tonight.

“Tonight,” she continued, her breathy voice still echoing from every corner, “I shall narrate one of the oldest and most guarded stories of our land.”

‘Dramatic,’ thought Sam.

She continued. “But, first, an introduction is essential.”

‘Of course,” thought Sam, taking his goblet off the table and leaning back in the chair, ready to watch ‘her show.’

In the cosmos above, one of the stars began to blink, then suddenly shone brightly.  It moved from its position, whizzed around the table so close to everyone’s faces they had to pull back.  With saucer-like eyes, they watched as it returned to the centre of the scene, then morphed into a life-size head - cut off just below the shoulders.  What was bare electric blue mesh at first, like a basic 3D wire model, soon transformed into something more anthropomorphic.  Once the features were complete and colour added, she became quite remarkable.  She rotated, smiling seductively and somewhat arrogantly at everyone, but bypassed Mimi, which Sam thought was true to form.

Sam felt like applauding her entrance - a few sarcastic claps should do it - but he didn’t.  Overall, it wasn’t a bad show.  She had evolved since he was a child.  She was basic then, no colour, merely a ‘mesh head’ -  a name he used to call her, which she had always taken huge offense to.  But at least she stayed true to her adopted attitude.  It still stank.

She was ‘almost’ beautiful, but her features accentuated to a point where it went beyond beauty and bordered on strange, like noticeable cosmetic surgery.  But begotten from science, she could only go so far to become the ’real deal,’ and that grated on every particle of her fabricated existence.

SEASON TWO

Hi there.
My name is Linnea.  A former Art student, I attended Performing Arts school in Belfast, achieving distinctions in playwriting, music, dance and acting.  My background is in the recording business as an artist and published songwriter.  My love for poetry, writing, creating characters and concepts for tv shows has followed me since childhood, with the story of Shine first mind-crafted and scribbled when I was eight years old; then later, while globetrotting with different record labels, the script and connecting comic illustrations developed.  At first, it was intended as a children’s book and was published in the Yorkshire Sport, running in comic strip form, but when a book publisher showed interest and one board member out of eleven felt it should be rewritten for an older audience, I accepted the challenge.  That’s when Shine became Journey to Etrah island (complete). Star of the kings - Land of Aron - Sacille (all three written, mid-drafting) and Book 5 - The Four Faces (outline draft).

If ever required, each comes with spin offs, and their own soundtrack, a continuing process of writing and recording, and a virtual poetry book is in motion to accompany Land of Aron, as its chapter titles form short poems.
